Oman has signed a landmark Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to establish the world's first commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor, linking the Port of Duqm in Oman to the Port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and further to Germany's Port of Duisburg
Oman has entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with partners in the Netherlands and Germany to create the world's first commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor. This initiative will facilitate the export of RFNBO-compliant liquid hydrogen from Oman's Port of Duqm to the Port of Amsterdam, and subsequently to Germany's Port of Duisburg and other European destinations.
The agreement encompasses eleven key stakeholders, including Oman's national hydrogen orchestrator Hydrom, energy group OQ, the Ports of Duqm, Amsterdam, and Duisburg, as well as companies like ECOLOG, EnBW, Tata Steel, Advanced Methanol Amsterdam, and Hynetwork Services. This consortium aims to establish a comprehensive supply chain for green hydrogen, leveraging Oman's strategic location and renewable energy resources.
A central component of the project is the development of a state-of-the-art liquefaction, storage, and export facility at the Port of Duqm. This facility will be instrumental in cooling hydrogen into liquid form for efficient transportation. ECOLOG's advanced vessel design ensures zero boil-off during transit, minimizing cargo loss and setting new standards for efficiency and sustainability.
Upon arrival in Europe, the liquid hydrogen will be regasified at the Port of Amsterdam and distributed to industrial off-takers in the Netherlands and Germany through an integrated network of pipelines, rail connections, and barge distribution via the Dutch canal system.
Sophie Hermans, the Dutch Minister for Climate and Green Growth, remarked, "This agreement represents a landmark moment in our commitment to clean energy. By linking Omani green hydrogen with Europe’s energy needs, we are advancing our shared climate goals and creating a sustainable energy pathway."
Oman's Minister of Energy and Minerals, H.E. Eng. Salim Nasser Al Aufi, added, "This partnership reflects Oman’s commitment to playing a leading role in the global green hydrogen economy, while strengthening ties with Europe to support its sustainable clean energy transition."
This corridor not only signifies a pivotal step in Oman's ambition to become a global hub for green hydrogen production and export but also aligns with Europe's objectives to diversify energy sources and achieve climate neutrality. The project builds upon previous collaborations and studies, including agreements made during COP27, and sets the stage for future advancements in the hydrogen economy.
